Natural Product Collections

MerLion has assembled one of the largest and most diverse natural product collections available for screening. The collection comprises over 300,000 extracts derived from over 129,000 living microbial strains and 38,750 plant specimens sourced from more than 100 countries. The genetic diversity within the MerLion collection is exceptional. With 57% of all known cultured fungal genera, over 67% of the world's plant families and 70% of filamentous bacterial genera represented, the collection has been described as "the most diverse and comprehensive collection of plant and microbial samples in the world" (Prof Geoffrey A. Cordell, University of Illinois).

The major types of organism represented in the collections are:

  • Plants - Algae, Conifers, Diocotyledons, Monocotyledons, Pteridyophytes
  • Eubacteria - Alteromonadales, Bacillales, Enterobacteriales, Flavobacteriales, Oceano- spirillales, Pseudomonadales, Vibrionales
  • Fungi - Ascomycetes, Basidiomycetes, Deuteromycetes, Yeasts, Zygomycetes
  • Actinomycetes - Micromonosporaceae, Nocardiaceae, Pseudonocardiaceae, Strepto-mycetaceae, Streptosporangiaceae, Thermomonosporaceae

 

Our Collection Policy

MerLion Pharma is concerned about the potential detrimental effects of unrestrained and unauthorised removal of natural resources on the long-term ecological well being of any natural habitat. Consequently, MerLion Pharma recognises the importance of the 1992 United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity and conforms to its guidelines when acquiring natural product samples. MerLion Pharma recognises the sovereign rights of national governments over their natural resources and the importance of working only with bona fide suppliers who possess the expertise and authority to obtain natural product samples.
