Service Details: MerLion has a strain collection of over 130,000 microorganisms (fungi, actinomycetes, eubacteria and myxobacteria) collected from diverse habitats and ecological niches and extensive experience of fermenting and extracting these to produce natural compounds. Customers can specify the strain they are interested in and we will search for exact matches or related strains based on taxomonic information in our database. Customers can also combine this with MerLion’s proprietary fingerprinting technology to identify producers of compounds of specific interest: See Chemical Fingerprinting of Extracts.

Customer can send their own strain or identify the strain from the MerLion collection. Microbial strains will be preserved, subcultured and fermented in shake flasks or 24-well microtiter plates (actinomycetes and eubacteria only), as requested. Biomass and/or culture supernatant will be extracted using organic solvent and dried extracts can be shipped to the customer or used for further characterisation, fractionation or chemical fingerprinting at MerLion. Fermentation of microorganisms can also be undertaken on a larger scale in a 30 L bioreactor, as required. Deliverable: Written report and provision of extract material (if required). |
